Did you know that the practice of witchcraft has a strong, rich history? Modern Wicca started in the mid-20th century with Gerald Gardner. He claimed to have been initiated into a witches' coven in the late 1930s in New Forest, Hampshire. In the 1940s, he founded the Bricket Wood Coven with his wife, Donna. Lois Bourne, Jack Bracelin, Frederic Lamond, Dayonis, Eleanor Bone, and Dafo were all initiates of this coven, and they are also notable early Wiccans.

While Gardner did make reference to witches as "the Wica," he never used the term "Wicca" to identify his practice. Instead, he used terms like "Old Religion" and "witchcraft." In the 1960s, this religion became commonly called "Wicca." Gardner's tradition was later named Gardnerianism and soon became the dominant form of witchcraft in England.

Currently in the United States, the number of Wiccans is significant. According to the American Religious Identification Survey, in 2008 there were 342,000 Wiccans in the U.S.
